Paul Percival, who runs an upholstery business in Caerphilly, south Wales, paid £275,000 for a two-bed cabana, at a beach resort on the north coast, 30 minutes’ drive from Puerto Plata airport. He was impressed by the rapid improvements to the infrastruc-ture and air links. “From my research, it would have been hard to have bought in such a prime location at this price elsewhere in the Caribbean or in most of coastal Europe,” he says. The Cricket World Cup did not bring the tourists or buyers some hoped for, so there are bargains to be found on the less favoured coasts of some islands. Buccament Bay, on St Vincent, is a seafront development with a choice of new and resale one-bed flats; from £175,000.
